Teacher's Desk

Mr. Hansen did complete the Boston Marathon on April 15. He started at 4:00, 4 hours after the official start, and ran with the race director. A police car escorted them all 26.2 miles and a bunch of Police Motorcycles joined in for the last miles to the finish. Imagine Mr. Hansen being chased by a police car for all those miles! At the finish line Mr. Hansen was met by his family and 10 teachers from Mt. Pleasant School. What a loud group they were! With the police escort, loud cheerings, lights, and cameras it was like Mr. Hansen was winning the race himself. At the end channels 5 and 7 in Boston interviewed him and he was shown on the news that night.

Race Recap

Did you get to see Mr. Hansen interviewed on Channel 9? Brad Dupuis of WMUR TV sports did a great job of keeping his interview positive and informative. It was fun to get interviewed. The interview was shown on Saturday, April 15 during the 6 and 11 o'clock news.

WNDS in Derry, New Hampshire called Mt. Pleasant the day of the marathon and came in to interview Mr. Hansen. Mr. Hansen is wondering who made the faces that forced the TV station not to show the whole class shot that was videotaped. That can be the only explanation for not showing such a good looking group of kids!

Visit the KidsRunning site for an interviewwith Mr. Hansen. KidsRunning.com is a new kids website, sponsored by Runner's World magazine. Notice that Nomar Garciaparra and Mr. Hansen have articles on the same page! That's cool! A picture has been changed on this site to a picture of Mr. Hansen with Amby Burfoot, the editor of Runner's World Magazine, and the winner of the Boston Marathon in 1968. Mr. Hansen was in 3rd grade himself that year and it was the first time he had ever heard of the Boston Marathon. He wanted to go to Boston and run it. He didn't. Amby won.

At the bottom of the article you can leave a comment for Carol Goodrow, a first grade teacher in Connecticut who is the webmaster of this site. Carol is one of the neat people I have met this year because of the "Boston Marathon situation."

Here is an article by Amby Burfoot on the Runners World Boston Marathon Website. You need to enter the website. Click on the "Latest News" link to find the article.

Here is the article that was in the Nashua Telegraph on April 16, 2000. Skip Cleaver writes about his interview with Mr. Giuliano the superintendent of the Nashua Public Schools. Mr. Giuliano gives his reasons for denying Mr. Hansen a personal day to run this years Boston Marathon. See, I wasn't just making this up! It is a true story.

New Nashua Telegraph Article

Mr. Hansen had an article written about his quest to run the Boston Marathon. It was in the Nashua Telegraph on February 27, 2000. He wishes that the article didn't have to be written, you can see why at this link.

1999 Boston Marathon

Here is Mr. Hansen being interviewed by Channel 9 WMUR after finishing last years Boston Marathon and again after arriving back at Nashua with friends from the Gate City Striders. He thought this would be the most press he would ever get in his life!

Now I just have to go run the race and make sure I finish. (Mr. Hansen)

Mr. Hansen will be running the Boston Marathon after teaching a full day of school on Monday April 17th. He will miss the official start at 12 and ride down to Hopkinton where he hopes to start at 4:00. He will run with Dave McGillivray, the technical director of the race. They will have a police escort all the way to the finish line. Here is Dave's article about his motivations for running, his marathon streak, and what it is like to run the marathon in last place.

The Boston Marathon Night Shift

Dave was a early running role model to Mr. Hansen. In 1978 he ran across the USA, raising money for the Jimmy Fund, finishing at Fenway Park. He was an early Hawaii Ironman triathlete. After completing the race, he decided to bring the race to New England. When Mr. Hansen heard about it, he was one of the first to decide to register, even though he didn't know how to swim and didn't own a bike. He completed the first 5 Cape Cod Endurance Triathlons held from 1983-1987. They remain 5 of the most memorable days of Mr. Hansen's life. Yes, that would be a full 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike, and then a full 26 mile marathon. Dave McGillivray was the race director for those races. Hopefully the two will connect in Hopkinton and complete this Boston together.
